Google Concentrating on Semantic Search Technology

According to a latest appointment with Amit Singhal, a top professional at Google search, Google is planning on making algorithmic changes in the long run in order to offer end customers better google search. Google is optimistic that the new changes, which will be mainly targeted on semantic search technological innovation, will strengthen their popularity in the internet google search market and help the company offer better mobile technological innovation advancing.

The algorithmic shift is partially motivated by Google’s plans to launch Google Assistant later this year on Android devices. Google Assistant, which will compete directly with Apple’s Siri, will provide users with answers to questions and specific information rather than traditional search results. Singhal, who is a senior Google VP and Google Fellow, recently indicated that semantic search is a necessary for a company to be competitive long-term in the mobile space.

Google makes almost $2B in profit in latest quarter

In another sign of a tech sector recovery, Google (GOOG)on Thursday surpassed Wall Street's expectations and reported a record fourth-quarter profit of nearly $2 billion.
The search giant's strong results for the quarter and year momentarily took attention away from its headline-grabbing threat last week to pull out of China over censorship and cyberspying.

Google said it earned $1.97 billion, or $6.13 a share, in the final three months of 2009, vs. $382 million, or $1.21 a share, in the final three months of 2008. Fourth-quarter revenue totaled $6.7 billion, a 17% increase.

Still, Google's stock price slipped $26.88, to $556.10, a 4.6% decline, in after-hours trading. Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, called the fourth quarter an "extraordinary end to a roller-coaster year."

Google pushed hard last year to popularize its Google Apps suite of online clerical tools, YouTube and its Android mobile phone operating system. But the vast majority of its sales and profit continue to come from search advertising.

"When you look at where their revenue comes from, it's all about search ads," says Kevin Lee, CEO of search consultancy Didit.

Google CFO Patrick Pichette said fourth-quarter results were "very strong" in many of the major markets the company operates in around the globe. Revenue from outside the United States totaled $3.5 billion, representing 53% of total revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 50% in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Whether China stays in that mix remains to be seen. Schmidt said the company is "in conversations with the Chinese government" about easing censorship and addressing cyberattacks designed to steal proprietary data. He acknowledged that Google is obeying China's laws and offering censored results in China right now.

"We remain quite committed to being there," Schmidt said in a conference call with analysts and reporters.

Earlier Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered a watershed speech outlining new initiatives to quell censorship and deter cyberattacks globally. She specifically called on China to conduct a "thorough review" of Google's complaints. "We look for that investigation and its results to be transparent," Clinton said.

Twitter tricks for generating backlinks

Twitter is one of the latest and greatest Web 2.0 apps and it gets tons of traffic. And I think twitter will best in 2010 for SEO professional. However, from the point of view of a SEO expert, it is more important that Twitter can get tons of traffic as well. So, if you still don't have an account with Twitter,you'd better open one.

Twitter is simple to use and this is what made it so popular. Twitter is fashionable right now, so enjoy the moment. Even the creators of Twitter admit that as with MySpace and other Web 2.0 sensations, Twitter will inevitably go out of fashion some day, so hurry up and get some traffic for free now, when itis still all the rage of the season.

Twitter is simple to use, yet it is really powerful. You might need a couple of hours to get familiar with the basic functionality of Twitter and of some of the extras it has but you can harness its power, even if you don't know it very well.

Unlike most of the other places you can get traffic for free, Twitter is a micro blogging platform, which means that there are restrictions on the number of characters in a message. Therefore, you need to be concise in your Tweets and use your space wisely. In addition to being concise, here are some more tips to help you get traffic from Twitter:

Twitter profile

Your profile and your username are the first two things your visitors will see when they go to your Twitter page. If your profile looks boring, people won't bother to read your tweets, not to mention visit the links you post in them. You can't write a very long bio of yours, but you can enter a few words about you – i.e. your occupation, your interests, etc. You can also include a couple of keywords in your bio.

Username

Your username is also very important. You need to pick a username that is targeted at your niche. For instance, if you are promoting your SEO services and want to drive traffic to your SEO site, you can choose something like SEOmaster, SEOguru, SEO services, etc. Your username will show in searches other users make and this is why you must pay attention to what you choose.

Your URL Or Blog in Profile

According to some statistics, 80% of tweeters don't provide an URL in their bio! Well, maybe these people are not SEO experts/Internet marketers and they don't need this traffic but you as a SEO expert can't afford to miss it. So, don't forget to include your URL in your profile!

Send the link to your profile to your friends

Your friends will be your most loyal audience, so if they don't know about your Twitter page, make them aware of what they are missing.If you have their emails, or know their accounts on other networks, you can send a mass invite.

Search forTwitter users with similar interests

You might have millions of friends, but more followers are always welcome. That is why you can use the search functions on Twitter and find people with similar interests. Find as many as you can and invite the mall. These people might not be as loyal as your friends, coworkers, and acquaintances but still you will get hits from them as well. Some Twitter users report that about 1-2% of their followers visit their site a day, which means that if you have 1,000 followers, you might expect to get at least 10 or 20visits a day to your site. This response rate might seem low but there are ways to increase it.

Socialize on Twitter as much as you can

When you are active in Twitter, respond to the posts of your followers and visit their links, this seriously increases your chances that you will get the same in return. In a word, actively follow those that follow you.

Tweet regularly

As with all other kinds of media, if you want to keep your audience, you need to feed it regularly. Writing a short tweet takes just seconds, but it is enough in order to keep your followers happy. It goes without saying, that you should tweet about useful things, so if you don't have something meaningful to post about you or your sites, it is quite OK to post a link to an article, a video, a blog, etc. you found on the Net and you like.

Don't spam

You might feel that every single user on Twitter is interested in you and your blog/site but this is not exactly so. You might be tempted to make as many users as you can aware of your Twitter page and your latest tweets but you'd better refrain from doing this, unless you want to see if you can get a ban or not.

Take advantage of Twitterfeed

Twitterfeed is one more useful service you can take advantage of in order to increase your reach. Go to twitterfeed.com and configure your feeds.

Make TwitterSearch love you

Twitter has a great search function and its main advantage is that it offers real-time results. Google might be fast in indexing pages but its indexing is not real-time. Users are hungry for hot news and nothing beats a real-time search. Many bloggers report that they are getting more traffic from Twitter than from Google and partially this is due to the fact that their tweets are popular and users find them with ease.

Add Twittergadgets to your site

There are tons of Twitter gadgets and new ones are being released every day. The cool thing about Twitter gadgets is that your blog visitors can become your Twitter followers. If your Twitter followers have many followers, chances are that some of these followers will notice you and will join your network. As we already mentioned, building a large and targeted network is key to getting more Twitter traffic to your site.

These are some of the main ways in which you can get traffic from Twitter.If you are creative and if you monitor what's going on on Twitter and what new Twitter gadgets are released, you will certainly find more ways to drive traffic from Twitter to your site.

How universal search is changing the SEO industry

Universal search a.k.a Blended search is something that every person (who depends on internet for his daily and intellectual needs) experience every time he submits a query on his favorite search engine. The idea was first thrown in the year 2001 by Marissa Mayer, VP – Search Products & User Experience at Google who also wrote an article on the topic back in May 2007, when Google officially rolled out the concept on its search engine – Google.com. Today we see all major search engines have adopted this revolutionary approach to make search experience even richer, and yet simpler for the user who is looking for most relevant information on web in the least possible time.

But what exactly is Blended Search?

As the name suggests, Blended search is the process of blending or mixing content from multiple sources and displaying them together on one page. When the idea was launched around two and a half years ago, the main sources of the content were – news websites, videos, images, local and books which are still independent vertical search engines. But today, we have started seeing more results from social networks like facebook & twitter and press release website which are updated more frequently than any other online media.

Universal Search is also known as Blended Search

And how is it changing the SEO industry?

Earlier, website owners used to optimize their website with only focus on relevant content so that search engines can rank their websites on top of search results. It doesn't work the same these days now since search engines do not only rely on your website content. Instead, they have started looking for varied sources of information where they can find more relevant and updated content. News websites like CNN & Reuters; Social networking sites like Facebook & twitter; and Press release website like prweb.com etc are some of the sources that search engines rely heavily on for their content.

Please note that this doesn't mean you should stop optimizing your website content. On the contrary, you need to start updating your website content more frequently now since search engines love new, updated & relevant content. This is probably why many company blogs and press releases have become so popular these days.

But is it really changing the SEO industry?

Yes, it is. Because people have really started publishing their content on all the types of online media which has slight chance of being crawled by search engines and get ranked on first page. Here are the few examples -

  1. Image results – All the search engines already have image search as an independent search engine which drives more than 10% of traffic for website owners. People have been focusing on optiming their images by using alt tags and more proper image names for quite some time now.
  2. Videos & Slideshows- YouTube, owned by Google has the highest number of videos uploaded on the web. People have started publishing a video presentation of their company or products demo. They, then promote it on YouTube by writing comments, adding ratings and sharing with more people so that it gets enough popularity to get ranked on first page of search results. Then these videos or presentations are pushed on to other popular aggregator sites like Vimeo, Slideshare etc.
  3. News Results – Press & news websites are the most hit upon source by website owners. There has been an evident surge in press releases published in last few years by website owners. The only reason being the importance given to such sites by Google.
  4. Local business listings – Google, Bing and Yahoo show their respective maps to show local business listings. Hence, every website owner makes it a point that their business is submitted in local business listing directory. They strive hard to promote it by adding more ratings, comments and sharing with friends & existing clients.
  5. Three blogs a week has become a reality. Website owners do not miss a single news however trivial it is, just to have something new up on their company blog. [Don't worry this post is not one of those ]
  6. Social media marketing (SMM) – SEO Companies have started offering a new service called 'Social media marketing' wherein they promote their brand on social networking websites like – Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, Digg, Myspace etc. They do it by submitting their brand name, linking it to their website, building network of friends and by commenting on other blogs.
  7. Google Product search – Online shop owners are utilizing this feature to promote their products on increase sales from Google organic search result. Google offers merchants a separate place to submit their products individually with prices and description. Google then shows their products on top of search results for the relevant query.

Clearly, the focus on just your website's content is the thing of the past. In order to maximize your chances to be on the top of the search engine rankings and drive more traffic, you have to be on your toes all the time and exploit every source of data that major search engines scour today for their search results.

Going Beyond Banner Advertising

A major stumbling block for many internet marketing newbies is the false belief that the placement of a banner ad on a web page is all that’s required to immediately start making a few sales. This is a false premise.

There are a couple of key principles of internet marketing that can prevent any newbie from falling into this enticing trap.

No. 1) Choose A Relevant Affiliate Program

Let’s hope at least that as a newbie you have chosen an affiliate program to promote that has relevance to your online interests.

As an example, if you have placed a website online that discusses the care of young infants, it is certainly easy enough to find affiliate programs that deal with infant health, nutrition, clothing, or even security, such as baby monitors.

The affiliate program doesn’t have to exactly match your website content, but it should be very closely related. If your site is about infants why on earth would you want to promote rock videos? Only perhaps, if you think your own child is a future musical prodigy.

Yet, many first-time internet entrepreneurs make just such a mistake. Even an affiliate program that deals with teens or preschoolers is not close enough, because the people coming to your site, presumably are not seeking information about those subjects. Tiny infants are not preschoolers.

Of course you might make a sale or two, by virtue of blind luck, but that is not the way to run an internet business.

You want at all times to be lean and focused. Don’t waste effort promoting anything that is going to be a hard sell. Your effort is best spent elsewhere.

No. 2 ) Write Informative Articles and Testimonials

Using the same example above, let us propose that you have wisely chosen an affiliate program that relates to young infants. Now what? You’ve had your banners up for a month or two, and you just aren’t making many sales. This despite the fact that your site receives a reasonable amount of traffic.

One of the problems you’ve unwittingly created for yourself, is that banner ads are too easily ignored. They are like background music.

Each hour online, anyone who surfs the web is going to be bombarded with banner ads, such that they become invisible. And it doesn’t matter even if the banner ads are of excellent quality.

They are still banner ads.

Text-based ads are a much more effective advertising method, although at first glance it would seem exactly the opposite. But, let’s look at this idea more closely.

Banner ads say out loud that you’re attempting to sell something. One of the major precepts of internet marketing is that people DO NOT WANT TO BE SOLD.

People are online to gather knowledge. Even if they are online as a time for recreation and pleasure, they are still interested in learning.

Human beings are innately curious. This is a plus for you, as you attempt to make a sale.

Here’s how.

One way to introduce text-ads into your web site is to write articles. Or to write a review of the very product that you’re trying to sell. { you aren’t trying to market something you haven’t purchased yourself, are you? }

Testimonials are an extremely effective advertising device.

That’s why so many web merchants place testimonials on their site, and frequently on the very first page of the site, where the testimonials are most likely to be viewed.

Also, testimonials are a form of “aggressive” advertising, that doesn’t look aggressive at all. This is because testimonials deliver valuable information to the consumer. Thus, the consumer is more likely to make a purchase because they never form the negative impressive in their mind, that they are being SOLD something.

A person who is feeling negative is much less likely to decide to make a purchase.

~~~~~~
One final point before we conclude this article. Banner ads are not going to disappear. They can still serve a useful purpose. Sometimes a banner ad or two, can help dress-up a drab,
uninspired-looking site. You don’t want your website to resemble a plain white term paper.
A little sizzle is okay. But, NEVER let banner ads be your main advertising method.
Also, if every other affiliate is using the same banner ads, then the impactof the ads on your site will be further lessened. The key to online marketing success is to be unique.
Online, as opposed to the offline world, uniqueness is an endearing trait.
Don’t plaster those same ads all over your pages everyone else in your marketing niche is using.Write your own articles. The customer will become comfortable that you know what you are
talking about. This gives them a reason to return. { a key factor as people rarely make a purchase the first time they ever visit a website. }
Stay on your toes, don’t become complacent, and never miss an opportunity to improve the content, relevance, and usefulness of your site.
If you have a thought or an idea about something. Then place it online. You’re always more likely to receive a click-through from a well-written informative article than from some flashy banner ad. Give the customer more of what they want, without trying to sell them.
That is the simple key to increasing the overall marketing effectiveness of your website.
