How to optimize Google crawling and indexing?

Getting a good organic rank for websites is the top priority today. Due to this Search Engine Optimization is increasingly been practiced by many business owners.

You can easily find a whole lot of information regarding various optimizing techniques, website architecture, crawling and indexing on the World Wide Web but when it actually boils down to the implementation process, you will be really amazed with all the nuances involved in it.

The primary question which generally bothers website owners is that how easy it is for search engines to crawl websites? Since Internet is vast and new contents are being regularly updated, it becomes virtually impossible for search engine robots to crawl the entire content present online. This means that only a percentage of this content is crawled by search engine spiders. Moreover amongst the crawled content, only a portion is indexed due to availability of limited resources.

Elaborating on this topic further, Susan Moskwa of Google, recently uploaded a presentation giving smart tips on how to optimize your crawling & indexing. She states that since URLs act as bridges between a website and a search engine crawler you should not make them complicated or redundant. In order to allow crawlers to be able to find and crawl your URLs, organize them in such a way that crawlers are directly led to distinct contents of your website. On doing this you will prevent crawlers from wasting time on going through empty web-pages and/or crawling same web content again and again via different URLs. Optimization of URLs allows crawlers to spend their time accessing the actual content of your website.

There are some important real life examples in this presentation that have been categorized under a “not to do” list. These include homegrown URL hacks and encoding, parameters camouflaged as part of the URL path and infinite crawl spaces. In addition to these, you will also find some other useful recommendations like removal of user-specific details from URLs, disallowing actions which Google-bot cannot normally perform and sticking to one URL for a particular set of content.

So if you too want to make search engine crawlers trace your website faster, do make sure to follow all the above Google SEO tips next time you optimize your website.

How to Stop Blog Spammers

Now anyone can make comments on a particular blog posting. As blog commenting has grown more popular, so has spam commenting. In this newsletter, we'll go over why comments are a great form of feedback for your blog, how they help the credibility of your content, what spam comments are and how to prevent them from happening.

Comments : A great form of feedback

When blogs first came around, they were simply online journals. No one could post comments on a blog posting. That all changed in 1998 with OpenDiary, a site which allowed people to comment on blog postings. Now every blog, whether it is remotely or self-hosted, includes this option to comment.

Commenting is great because it allows real people to tell you what they think about your form. It gives you feedback on what you are doing right and what you may need to improve. Comments can be encouraging to you and motivate you to post more quality blog messages. Or they can be constructive criticism to make you work harder to get better at writing content.

Whatever the style of comment is, it is still very useful to your blog. High numbers of comments have the ability to make a blog look credible because they show that the blog is being read by a lot of people. That's something that every blog owner wants, and comments help to let them know just how many people enjoy their content.

Bad comments
Unfortunately, spammers have now started to use comments as a way to spam. How do you know what a spam comment is? Well, a spam comment is a comment that only advertises another site or product. If the comment seems bland/generic with a cheap link thrown in, then it's definitely a spam comment.
Here is an example of a typical spam comment:

"Hey, this site is really cool. Check out my really cool site at spamsite.com."
Of course not all spam comments will be this blatant, but you get the point.
Fortunately for bloggers, as spam comments have grown, so has the ways to prevent it. Here are a couple ways that you can prevent spam comments from even being posted on your blog.

#1: Close off commenting on older blog posts
There are options for you to stop comments from being posted on any particular blog post. Lots of times, spammers will post comments in weeks or months old posts. So take away this opportunity from them to keep it from happening. Most blog hosters now offer this as a standard option in the tool panel. If one of your posts has been up for a couple weeks, close it up.

#2: Take advantage of software offered to prevent comment spam
If you host your own blog using WordPress, you can use an option in that software to prevent spam. Even if you aren't using WordPress, you can still use other Spam comment blocking software like Spam Karma, Akismet, and Bad Behavior. While these aren't 100% effective, they have proven to be quite effective in preventing spam from happening.

#3: Take a look at your settings and see what can be tweaked to toughen your protection
Lots of blogs now have settings to help prevent spam. If you already have a spam blocker on in your blog and are still experiencing spam, take a closer look at the settings to see if there's anything that can be tweaked to make your protection stronger. However, if you do this, you should closely monitor your posts to make sure legit comments aren't being blocked out. If they are, you might have to lighten up a bit.

#4: Regularly read your blog comments
Be sure to keep an eye on your comments. Even the best software or setting can't prevent everything, so you will have to occasionally manually remove comments on your own.
By applying the above principles, you can ensure that your blog is full of only good, quality comments, which will help your credibility tremendously.

Comments are a great form of communication between yourself and your readers. They help the credibility of your blog!

Using Social Media to Build Out Inbound Links

There are many creative ways referred to as link-baiting to get people to link to you without you even having to ask. The easiest way to sum that up is engaging, original content. And there it is again, that word. Content. In the context of social networking, use a combination of a blog, article directories, press releases, Squidoo, Wet Paint, Hubpages, paid links and online charity donations. If you are surprised about the last item on that shopping list, you’re not alone. But it’s true: The “.org” status of charity sites is highly regarded by Google — and thus gets an almost immediate indexing to the search pages.
Here is a little insight into how a campaign is constructed and what results can be generated. Let’s assume you are trying to attract attention to your site and build dozens of relevant links in the process. Creating hundreds of new links is the whole point of a link-bait campaign. These campaigns are similar to PR campaigns where the quality of the content and the distribution list are the critical success elements.
Step 1: Research your market and develop content that is relevant to this audience. In many cases these articles launch on Digg.com, which is visited primarily by young tech-savvy males. The choice of a catchy title that would immediately appeal to that target market is critical.
 Step 2: Create a page on the main site that looks like an ordinary article page. Use images where appropriate.
Step 3: Invite all your friends and colleagues, individually – not in a spammy email, to Digg the article. Start with our own personal and business networks and then expand to other acquaintances and friends-of-friends as much as possible. This is the hardest and most laborious part of the link-bait campaign. It can take hours to send out all the individual emails and chat notifications with the link embedded.
Step 4: Be patient and watch the Diggs grow and the traffic swell.
As you write your next blog posting, comment, article or press release, heed the words of the experts and don’t get too greedy. Follow a rule of thumb that you need only to optimize for one phrase per content item in these socially connected sites, and never have more than two outgoing links.
 It is generally agreed that the more outgoing links a web page or a press release has, the more diluted the effect becomes. With the second generation of websites, or “Web 2.0? social media, like MySpace and Facebook, are only relevant or applicable to some marketing strategies, and even then require startling creativity in order to make any difference. Choose your off-site content pages carefully. Not only could they be a misplaced marketing effort, but also the cost of maintaining such a site with up-to-date and relevant content can be exhausting.

Social Bookmarking More About Sharing Than Bookmarking

I have been in the SEO industry for more than 5+ years now. From what I have learnt from my experience, is that Social Media is the most aggressive tool in the internet marketing industry to gain web traffic in a short period of time. Most of the SEO experts refer to it as Viral Marketing with a mix of SMO, Social media marketing but popularly known as Social media optimisation.

I have often seen in most reputed companies based in the UK, they have social bookmarking experts who are assigned the job of bookmarking site details such as Title, Description, URLs and tags into most popular bookmarking site such as Delicious, Reddit, Stumble Upon etc.

Tis is no brainer,I believe it's the waste of technology or just stuffing or spamming these web 2.0 sites. Submitting your site details into these highly traffic generating websites is not enough. There are loads and loads of people doing it. But we should be more intelligent and smarter than others by making good use of these social engagement sites.

These are some tips below which you can use to promote your website through Viral Marketing:

1) Create full profile with real name on these websites. Submitting just the details required to bookmark sites for free is not enough. Create a profile where other members can easily get connected with you.

2) Along with bookmarking websites, it is also necessary to share these websites. Make friends, join groups of your industry and try to remain active in these sites as much as possible.

3) Create groups using most highly and relevant search term of your industry and invite your friends to join these groups.

4) Use your Gmail, Yahoo and other IM contacts in finding more people who are already using these web 2.0 sites. Also invite other friends in your contacts to join these websites which would help in networking as well as promoting their websites.

5) Instead of choosing just keywords such as "Social Bookmarking" as title choose "How Will Your Website Benefit Through Social Bookmarking". People like long phrases rather than just keyword stuffing.

Follow these simple steps and you will find a rather new look of Social Media Optimization.

I know its difficult to use these steps in all social bookmarking sites but you can easily try them in top 10 bookmarking sites of my choice.

1. Delicious
2. StumbleUpon
3. Propeller
4. Digg
5. Reddit
6. Furl
7. Mixx
8. Diggo
9. Twitter
10. Faves

You can also try some other sites that are popular as well as good traffic generating such as FaceBook, MySpace, Orkut, LinkedIn, Xing etc. These are social networking sites where you can communicate with people from your relevant industry as well as share your tips and strategies all together. This above tactics describe viral marketing in whole. Viral marketing is lot more creative and the person who is able to attract traffic with content can only survive in the viral marketing industry.

So if you don't have any experience in viral marketing then choose some established company that offers professional SMO services and helps your website in getting lots and lots of relevant traffic.

Try these 10 most popular social bookmarking sites to promote your website and I assure you that there will be gradual increase in your web traffic not too long.

Improve Your Google Rankings in One Easy Step

seo your website

Having a top rank in Google is the holy grail for anyone who has a website. Organic Google traffic is free advertising and how most bloggers (especially those just starting out) achieve visitors and traffic to their site. It all comes down to a simple numbers game. Essentially, more traffic = more money-making opportunities from your blog. The question is, how do you get ranked higher for my blog posts using Blogger?
Before I tell you how, let me give you a quick lesson is search engine optimization (aka SEO). There are two main components: “off-page” and “on-page” optimization. “Off-page” SEO refers to tactics such as link building. The more websites that point their links to your blog/website, the better. It’s a democratic way of showing Google that your site must be important if lots of people are pointing to it. Even more important with “off-page” inbound links is the actual link text (anchor text) that is used to point to your site.
Here’s my proof. If you search Google for the term “click here” you’ll see that Adobe Reader and Apple’s Quicktime software are in the top 3 results. Why? Because so many other sites are linking to these two sites with “click here” as the anchor text to download their software. That’s the power of “off-page” SEO which you as a blogger can’t do much about besides writing such great unique content that generates lots of links.
So with “on-page” SEO you have complete control over how well you’re optimized for Google. This includes keywords in your post titles, title tags, using header tags (h1, h2) and other tactics. Now the one we’re going to focus on in this article is the blog title tag.
Title tags are one of the most (if not the most) important “on-page” elements to ranking high in Google. Search engines such as Google weigh the importance of each word in the title from left to right. So ideally you want your blog post title all the way to the left and your actual blog name to the right. Below is a perfect example of how this should look.
blogger seo title
Blogger templates by default don’t come with search engine optimized (SEO) title tags meaning you aren’t maximizing your blog to rank better in Google. If you take a look at your existing Blogger title you’ll see that blogger displays the blog name first then followed by your post title. They have it backwards so let’s get your blog setup properly.
We’re going to have to make a quick edit to your Blogger template which might intimidate some of you but it’s very small and painless. All I ask you to do first is to backup your template just in case you make a boo boo. That makes it easy to revert back without much headache.

Step #1

In your Blogger dashboard, go to “Layout” => “Edit HTML”.

Step #2

In the template code, do a search for this: . It’s usually in the first 5-10 lines of code in your template near the top.

Step #3

Replace that bit of code with the following code:

Step #4

Save your template and go back to your blog. Click into any individual post and look at the page title.
All your blogger posts are now much better optimized to rank higher in Google. I’m not going to promise you a night and day difference but you’ve taken a step in the right direction. Now just go post unique high quality content so people searching Google will find your blog first!

How to Promote Your Facebook Fan Page & Get Lots of Fans

The most effective, not really difficult to implement and quite obvious ways to promote your fan page

Round 1: Create fresh content for people to want to join:

  • Aggregate your blog feed. Simply RSS allows to automatically update your fan page wall with your blog RSS. You may also want to import your blog feed to your fan page notes (for that go: “Edit page“, find “Notes” under “Application” and click “Edit“, then “Edit import settings” and at last provide your feed URL).
Promote Facebook fan page: import blog feed
  • Try Static FBML is another app to keep in mind: it adds advanced functionality to your Page using the Facebook Static FBML application. This application will add a box to your Page in which you can render HTML or FBML (Facebook Markup Language) for enhanced Page customization.
  • Add a personal note: Add your personal photos, personal welcome-videos are also great (create a short video welcoming your fans and describing what they can do on your page);
  • Provide a place for interaction/self promotion: Start a thread on your Discussion Board that allows your fans to promote their sites or inviting to share Twitter IDs and to follow each other.

Round 2: Invite your friends to join

There’s no way to invite all your friends in bulk but you can spend a few minutes to select (all) your friends and send an invitation to them;

Promote fan page: invite friends
Now, once you are done, go ahead and ask your best friends to invite people as well

Round 3: Try social ads

The best thing about Facebook advertising (well actually there are two: one is that you can pay as little as $1 per day to test it and the second one…) is that it can be very well-targeted (still, it won’t work for all niches and campaign types but sometimes it works quite well). The Facebook ad campaign can be targeted to:

  • Location;
  • Age group;
  • Sex;
  • Education;
  • Keywords;
  • Work place;
  • Relationship status;
  • Language;
  • Connections (fan page, event or group) – this means you can for example target fans of your competitor;
  • Friends’ connections:
Promote Facebook fan page: social ad

Round 4: Promote on Twitter

If you (or your friends) have solid following on Twitter, promote your Facebook fan page their.
Besides, you can link your page to your Twitter account by simply clicking this link:
Link Facebook page to Twitter
There you can select to share status updates, links, photos, notes, and events with your followers on Twitter, directly from your Facebook Page thus promoting it to your Twitter followers:

Promote fan page: Twitter

Round 5: Leverage your email contacts

Doing business and networking on the Internet, you are likely to have a huge number of contacts in your email address book, so why not take advantage of that:

  • Include your page URL in your email signature for business correspondence;
  • Include your page URL in your email signature for Customer support, customer status updates and other automated messages;
  • Leverage Gtalk status: let your facebook fan page URL display whenever your IM contact hovers over your profile name:
Promote Facebook fan page: Gtalk
