How to promote your blog using social networking sites?

1. StumbleUpon Promotion

StumbleUpon is my top source of incoming traffic. When I publish a new article, poem, or photo that I want to share with others, I use the StumbleUpon toolbar in Firefox to share that post with all my friends and fans using the Send To option.

Also, there are groups on StumbleUpon. If your blog is about Gmail, then join the that group and get your link posted as a related site, or add a Gmail-related article to the discussion pages.

2. BlogCatalog Promotion

BlogCatalog, a network for bloggers, has several ways to promote your blog and articles.

Once you have a profile setup and your blog added to their directory, you can send broadcasts to all of your friends each time you have a new post, or alternatively, you can send a “Weekly Digest” broadcast of recent posts. These Broadcasts are displayed in your friends’ Dashboards, and also are emailed to them, so be sure to use an appropriate subject (as opposed to “New Post” or “Blog Update”), since this is what will be the attention grabber for your broadcast.

Other ways to promote on BlogCatalog include finding related discussions (like Yahoo Answers) and including a short answer plus a link to your related post. Also, you can join related groups and post links to your articles within group discussions.

3. Twitter Promotion

Twitter is probably the simplest network to use to promote your blog. Simply post a eye-catching, 140 character or less tweet with a link to your new article. Be sure to include the top keywords for that article, since not only your followers will see it, but people using Twitter search may come across it as well. An added bonus would be to check which queries are popular the day of your post, and use those keywords in your Tweet.

4. Facebook Promotion

Facebook offers a number of ways to promote your blog site and posts. For starters, you can create a Facebook Page for yourself or your blog. An unlimited number of fan will be sent updates whenever you update your page with new notes, articles, photos, etc, and you can also send everyone on your fans list direct Facebook messages.

Another promotion method is to build a Blog Network (now called NetowrkedBlogs). This creates a community for your blog followers, including a discussion wall and an updated RSS feed. A new feature for the NetworkedBlogs is broadcasting to all of your fans, but it is only available if you upgrade your account for $4.99, whereas if you create a Facebook Page you can message your fans for no cost.

To promote your new blog articles, you can post a link on your profile, which shows up in your friends’ News Feeds, and post a link into your status update. You can also join groups and post related links on the group’s discussion wall.

5. Myspace Promotion

Myspace, although less business and feature-friendly compared to Facebook, still has a large community to reach. The best method to use is to create a profile with focus on including keywords, and a link to your blog in the beginning of the About Me section. The benefit here is Myspace profiles do show up in Google keyword searches. Plus friends will be updated every time you update your profile. So when you change your song, for example, friends will come check out your profile, and if you have a widget with an RSS feed to your site, they may continue onto your site as well. You can also post a new bulletin which will show up on your friend’s Bulletin Board.

*As a side note, I do not know how well Myspace works for newer users. I have been on the site for many years, and the traffic I generate from it is from people who have been longtime friends on that network. The groups that would be related to blogging or other serious topics are not highly trafficked, and the status updates do not include hyperlinking with URLs.

6. Plurk Promotion

Plurk is another network similar to Twitter in the sense that you have to communicate your message via short, 140 character phrases. The difference? You can also share Youtube videos and images that will show up in your plurks (instead of just links).

7. Digg Promotion

Digg allows members to share sites via voting, or Digging, them. The best method of sharing links via this site is not to do self-submissions, but to add a Digg submission button or badge to each article and let your readers submit your story.

Going a bit against the grain on this topic, I typically submit my own posts to Digg. I do this primarily because I have my anal-retentive streak about making sure the post ends up in the proper category with an appropriate title & description, as those things cannot be changed later. Plus, people are more likely to add a vote for a story than take the time to submit it. I like my site’s social bookmarking to be as simple as possible for readers.

8. Other Social Networks Promotion

The amount of traffic you get depends on your activity and number of friends on those networks. Other networks I offer for use of blog promotion via the icons at the bottom of each post include Mixx & Reddit (both similar to Digg in the sense that they allow voting/rating for articles), Magnolia & Delicious (bookmarking sites), and Technorati. Also, there is SocialBrowse that allows you to bookmark pages via a Firefox plugin, and BloggerUnited that will post your most recent blog entry to their homepage when you login to the network. Although I belong to all of these networks (Delicious being my favorite for bookmarking), I do not notice a high level of traffic coming from them. However, since everyone has a preference to network, I like to have the options for them to share on the networks they choose.

9. Traffic Exchange Promotion

In addition to sharing posts directly through the networks mentioned above, there are also numerous groups on Facebook, BlogCatalog, Yahoo Groups, Tweetworks, and so forth for traffic & RSS subscription exchanges. While I do not think you should bookmark, promote or subscribed to just anything to get the exchange, there are good bloggers in these groups with great articles. Find ones you truly like, and then reply that you have Reddit/Dugg/Stumbled/subscribed to their article or site, and send your featured post or RSS link for the exchange. Also note the format that people send their links – if they send just the article link, or if they send their article link directed to the method they want you to promote. The easier you make it, the more likely more people will return the promotional favor.

Also, I know there are those that think this is not a legit way to promote your site. I have heard traffic exchanges referred to as cheating, cheap, and other negative connotations. But what is the difference between traffic exchanges and creating a contest to gain more rss subscribers? I think that if whomever I am exchanging with, I would have helped out without the exchange offer, what harm is there in that?

Google Blog Search Revamped

Google Blog Search is an invaluable tool for searching news and views off the beaten track. It scans the blog posts of the great and the good, spanning major companies to everyday journal writers.

Today Google have announced some key changes to the service. The alterations should make searching easier, more intuitive and user-friendly. The most notable key addition is the introduction of an RSS feed. This will provide quick updates straight to your feed reader on any number of desired topics.

As with other trending sites, including Twitter and Blogpulse, Google Blog Search now also includes Hot Queries. This will give you a rundown of the most popularly searched for terms, whilst Latest Posts notes the most popular stories being discussed.

No doubt further integration with the likes of Reader and iGoogle will come about, but Blog Search should now be a far more accessible tool. If you haven’t used it before, it’s well worth a look.

Follow this link for the complete Google Blog announcement.

Search Engine Optimization is an Art

The search engine job is to find the content that closes matches the search. The goal of SEO is to have your website show up as high as possible in the search results. It involves editing website content, keywords and HTML.

SEARCH ENGINE optimisation is an art or an Internet marketing strategy to drive volume of traffic to a website. It is unpaid medium. More a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. Search includes image search, local search, video research and specific search. The search engine job is to find the content that closes matches the search.

The goal of SEO is to have your website show up as high as possible in the search results. It involves editing website content, keywords and HTML. Search engine optimisers are consultants market agents and will do work for you. They optimise your site by using methods such keyword stuffing, articles sniping and black hat or spamdexing. They do keyword research and find out what words people are typing in search engine. Google, Bing and Yahoo search engines all gather and release keyword data in aggregate.

If you want to increase traffic, ‘pay per click’ (PPC) advertising may be an easy option, but SEO is better option over your PPC strategies.
Website traffic is essential for more leads, more sales and more profit. Search engine optimisation helps in development of the website and attract visitors and also give the company a top ranking.

How to Get Website Traffic

Website traffic proves to be an extremely difficult task for webmasters looking to get the word out about their site. I bet almost all webmasters would agree that their site would be successful or their idea would generate a ton of money if only they had enough web traffic. Well today is your lucky day because after you learn these five tips you will be on your way to generating web traffic to your site so you can make money or provide your visitors with what they want and expect from visiting your site.

Tip #1: Article Marketing
To generate traffic to your site write a minimum of 300 word articles that explain your site and how it will benefit the visitor or if you are selling a product set up the article to provide advice or techniques similar to those explained or facilitated through your product. After your articles are written, submit them to article directories (like ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, articlesbase.com). You should write at least 5 articles initially then follow up with an article a day for the highest level of efficiency or at least a new article a week.

Tip #2: Backlink Building
Getting links on sites outside of your own is a strong way to move up search rankings which subsequently leads to traffic increases. There are services such as those on submitedge.com that will submit your site to link directories to get links built up, but keep in mind that a ton of links in a short period may cause search engines to penalize your site’s rank for link spam.

Search for websites similar to your own and propose a link exchange to their webmaster because search engines love when similar sites link to each other. Also, type in Google “link:http://www.competitorssite.com” replacing “competitorssite” with the address of top sites for your site’s topic on Google to see what sites link to them. Once you see what sites have links leading to a competitor’s site, seek to get links on those sites as well, copy the competition and do better.

Tip #3: Search Engine Optimization
This is the best method for those without a budget who want to get traffic without spending a lot of money or using services to submit your site to an assortment of directories. The first thing is to set up meta tags on your site. Search Google for a meta tag generator and make sure you use targeted keywords in your description, title and keyword tags in your html head.

Once that is done seek to have 5-7% of your site’s content including targeted keywords, this is known as your page’s keyword density. Follow tip #1 and tip #2 which will boost your website’s rank along with bringing in traffic. This is a time consuming method but once you get on page one of Google, your site will have countless traffic.

Tip #4: Social Bookmarking
This is a relatively new method of obtaining web traffic and can be extremely effective when done correctly. There are a variety of sites that provide “social bookmarks.” Social bookmarks are simply enough when a visitor to your site likes your sites content and goes to a social bookmarking site (like digg.com, del.icio.us, etc.) and they tag your site’s content with keywords in which others can then find your site through that tag.

The best thing to do to get social bookmark tags from visitors is to place bookmark scripts to your site which can be obtained at the Digg website and addthis.com for delicious bookmark buttons. Your site can initially be submitted to Digg.com yourself and to many other social bookmarks through onlywire.com, which is a site that allows you to submit your site to a dozen or more social bookmarking sites.

Tip #5: Pay-Per-Click Advertising
The last tip of the article is paying for web traffic. This can be very expensive, but if done correctly can produce revenue far beyond your advertising costs. The leader in PPC advertising is Google AdWords. AdWords allows users to set up a small ad set up around keywords that are displayed as sponsored links when a user searches for a topic on Google. Keep in mind that the higher your budget the more traffic you will get, and that low budgets make it very difficult for your ad to produce conversions.

Secondly, keep in mind that extremely broad keywords likely have a lot of competition for ad slots and would be very expensive, so seek to have highly targeted, tightly targeted keyword phrases that target visitors that have the highest potential of becoming customers.

No Keyword in URL: Google Analytics Site Search

Google Site Search tracking is a valuable tool, however it requires that your site search keyword is contained in your URL.  What if your website platform doesn't support this?

There is a solution.  It's not pretty and its even a little bit technical, but it's possible.

Firstly, you need access to your websites template files, and in particular the template that displays search results.Secondly, you need to be able to "inject" the search keyword into the template file.

If you are confident with the above, forge ahead.  If not, talk to your web developer as these changes should be relatively straight forward for someone with experience.

Step 1

The first step is to add the following line of code to your existing Google Analytics tracking code:

pageTracker._trackPageview('/search?q=[keyword]');

Your tracking code should look something like this:

<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-635744-1");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
pageTracker._trackPageview('/search?q=[keyword]');
} catch(err) {}</script>

Step 2

Next, we need to replace [keyword] with the actual keyword being searched for.  The method in which you do this will vary depending on the website platform you use.  A PHP platform might handle it something like this:

pageTracker._trackPageview('/search?q=<?php echo $keyword; ?>');

Where $keyword contains the keyword string used.

Step 3

Lastly, we need to tell Google Analytics to look out for the query string used, which in the example above is simply 'q'.  This needs to be placed into the "Query Paramater" box in the Site Search section in your Google Analytics profile:

Step 4

Run a test search yourself and then view the HTML source to ensure your keyword is being inserted into the pageTracker javascript call.

Check your Google Analytics reports (Content > Site Search) over the next fews days to make sure search data is coming through, and then start analysing and acting!

Link Building Strategies For 2010

Attract more visitors, customers and revenue to your online store in 2010 with these ecommerce link building strategies for 2010. Leverage your time & content for maximum ROI on your marketing dollars better than ever before.

Before you launch any marketing endeavor, you need to decide the desired outcome you want to achieve so you can set proper goals, create a strategy to meet those goals and then take action to bring your marketing strategy to life. To start, here are five worthy goals that a well planned & executed link building campaign will help you achieve:

  1. Spread your brand awareness
  2. Increase the individual ranking of a specific page for a specific keyword search
  3. Diversify traffic from web properties beyond search engines
  4. Increase your website’s ability to rank pages, both new & old
  5. Achieve more complete indexation of your existing pages

Resist the temptation to shoot for all five goals at once. Pick one that is the most important to you; list the others in descending order of importance, for future action.

You’re much more likely to succeed and stick to the roadmap if you see progress early. Putting all your focus toward one goal helps you see progress much quicker than if you were to spread your efforts across five projects. Now for a little secret: many of the link building methods I am going to share will help you achieve multiple goals with each action. In essence, you compress the work needed to achieve multiple goals at once with overlapping link building.

Here are 3 methods to achieve each of the goals above.

Spread Brand Awareness

Increasing your brand awareness with SEO requires you to focus on exposure points for your website and brand.To increase brand awareness, go after sites with a high traffic volume, focusing on websites that already attract the people you want to sell to. Use these three simple, daily tasks to start spreading brand awareness:

Spread brand awareness with technorati, google blog search and yahoo answers

  1. Read & comment on blogs
  2. Answer questions in industry forums, groups (LinkedIn Groups) and answer sites (Yahoo Answers)
  3. Start using Twitter, don’t promote yourself; instead, promote others with Retweet

Increase Rankings For Specific Pages

Getting your website to show up on the first page or top 3 results in the search engines for a specific keyword search is what most people think of when performing SEO. A definite advantage to this is that you can craft your content & marketing to the customer persona of someone performing that specific search. In order to achieve your desired outcome you will need links from a variety of high quality websites with specific anchor text linking to a specific page.

Here are three link building methods for getting links to rank individual pages for specific keyword searches:
Increase rankings with SEOmoz Linkscape and PRweb

  1. Review sites already ranking for that keyword and build a list of domains that link to the site already ranking for the keyword query. Using Linkscape, you can find out exactly how many websites link to the site with that exact anchor text. Go after the links the sites already ranking have obtained.
  2. Write an article on a long tail keyword that contains your short tail keyword term, syndicate or license that content to other sites with an attribution link to your site. This gives you complete control over the link and anchor text. Depending on where you syndicate you may or may not be able to control what websites pick up the article.
  3. Press Release on a newsworthy topic your company is involved with targeted anchor text. PRWeb allows you to submit a press release and include a link with anchor text you choose for $200. Trust me, that’s a bargain.

Diversify Traffic Beyond Search Engines

While it feels great to see 80%+ of your traffic coming from organic search and anywhere from 75% to 90% of that traffic coming from Google it puts your website traffic at high risk. What happens if you disappear from the Google search results because of something out of your control? Do you really want your business to rely on just Google or any other search engine? Assuming you want continued and lasting success, you should diversify your traffic so that it is coming in from many sources.

Successful investors diversify their portfolio and successful online stores diversify their traffic sources because it leads to increased revenue sources. There are two areas to focus on when diversifying your traffic: sites with large volumes of traffic and sites with highly targeted traffic. Sites that have both are the cream of the crop for you and deserve the most focus.

The same tactics covered above in spreading brand awareness also work for diversifying your traffic. In addition, here are 3 more useful ideas.
Tubemogul video distribution and analytics

  1. Tubemogul – Use tubemogul to distribute videos to multiple sites. I don’t care what you sell people are looking for videos to watch about it because the majority of people would rather watch than read. Don’t believe me? Video consumption is up while Newspapers are cutting jobs.
  2. Flickr – A Picture is worth a thousand words and you can tie pictures of unrelated things back to your product or service with creativity. Pictures also help show you are a real, living human doing real things in the real world. The “fake” persona immediately disappears.
  3. Your Favorite Website – That’s right, on whatever websites you enjoy today for fun start connecting with people and spreading awareness of your website. If you read news, then use something like reddit or digg. If you like randomness use twitter more. In the end, give back to the website you love in an unselfish way and you will find opportunities for exposure open you never thought possible.

Increase Ranking Ability

How cool would it be for your new pages to show up on the first page of the search results within days or hours? Amazon, ESPN and CNN have all accomplished this by generating so many incoming links from so many different websites that the search engines make an assumption that almost anything they publish must be worthy of ranking.

The good news is you don’t have to be a million or billion dollar brand website to accomplish this. You may not be able to take on Amazon for books; however, everything from jewelry to pet supplies to clothes still has room for dominant players in the search results.

The goal to accomplish this is to get a high volume of authoritative sites to link to you consistently over time. A key to success is that once someone knows about you or talks about you; don’t let them forget about you. When you stay “top of mind” the likelihood of getting multiple links over time increases.

Here are some ways to passively get a large number of links from a ton of different sites; there is work upfront but the payoff is ongoing:

  1. Create a fun quiz that gives a badge at the end people can share on their blog or profile page on any number of sites. An example might be, “Are You A Redneck Marketer? Take A Quiz To Find Out”. Create 3-5 levels of Redneck Marketer and present based on answers.
  2. Create free online training and offer some certification or completion recognition that includes embeddable HTML content (similar to the quiz badge) for people to put on their site, blog or profile.
  3. Create a tool to help solve a problem. This could be something people use to make a purchase decision such as a wizard to decide what fits your customer’s needs. Or maybe it helps post purchase with something such as an electrical conversion calculator.

Achieve More Complete Indexation Of Your Site

As your site grows to 100,000 pages and progresses past 1,000,000+ pages you may find it difficult to keep your pages in the search index.

Amazon indexation in Google

The best way to combat this is to continually get links to your inner pages with a focus on pages you see falling out of the index. You can use both internal linking and external link building to help solve your indexation woes.

  1. Link to the pages not getting indexed from pages on your site that are already indexed and get crawled often in Google. You don’t have to use your home page but the page with the link should be within one link click from your home page which makes the page out of the index only two link clicks away. The sooner the link appears on your site page the better because search robots crawl from top to bottom, left to right.
  2. Guest blog post on another site and find a way to link directly to the page you want indexed. The great part about this is you get a page on someone else’s site with a very targeted link.
  3. Contest Prize – Usually for ecommerce sites specific product pages are the ones that become difficult to keep in the index. Hold a contest focused around the product(s) that you are having trouble keeping indexed. Everywhere you promote the contest include a link to the product page.

Now you have three link building strategies to help you achieve five different link building goals. The most important part of being successful in SEO is taking action immediately and daily. Pick your most important goal from above and perform one of the strategies today.

What tactics have you deployed to achieve your link building goals? Share your ideas by leaving a comment below.
